The Himalayan Mustang Inspiring Conversation with MuscleBlaze

1. MB: You sure rule the hearts of every fitness enthusiast. You are a story in yourself. Everybody would like to know where this story originated and what is the background?

Jeet Selal: I come from a small town in Uttarakhand, named Pithoragarh. I have grown up running down the hilly streets of this beautiful state. Walking and running down these streets is an exercise in itself (chuckles). I did my Bachelor’s in Sports Science and Marketing Management from Coventry University, UK, and went on to pursue my Masters in Sports Tourism Management.

2. MB: You do have a unique choice of courses! How does this small-town boy get into fitness? What was in your mind exactly when you chose sports as your education?

Jeet Selal: Ever since I was a kid, I had a thing for sports. I actively used to participate in various sports activities. I started learning the Korean martial art form ‘Taekwondo’ at an early age. Its very interesting and this got me excited to learn it even better. Some of you might know that I am a Blackbelt 1st dan in Taekwondo. During my school days, I also used to participate in other sports such as basketball.

I loved this game so very much and was involved in it till my senior high school. I realized that sports is what I am good at and I could definitely do something good with myself and my life if I pursued a career in this and this is why I went on to study sports science and management and also learned about the tourism aspect of sports.

How People Inspired By You

3. MB: That’s quite interesting and inspiring at the same time. It’s true that if you are good at something, take it professionally, and you can succeed in life and inspire others who are like you. Many people know you through your YouTube channel, so tell us something about it.

Jeet Selal: Yes, I like to motivate people to adopt a fit and active lifestyle. I want that more and more people in my country should be fit. There are many people who want to work out to achieve a certain level of fitness but do not have anyone to guide them on the workout plan and nutrition. This is why I started my YouTube Channel Jeet Selal Aesthetics in January 2016 where I post free nutrition and workout plans in Hindi for all the fitness enthusiasts and aspiring bodybuilders in India. I really wish to help all those who aspire to be a bodybuilder and I don’t want them to give up because of the lack of proper guidance.

How to Maintain Fan Base

4. MB: That’s so nice of you! We really need more and more people like you in India. This is certainly a great initiative that you’ve taken and this has just got us a bit more inquisitive. We want to know how do you focus on your fans and build & maintain trust with them?

Jeet Selal: I strongly believe in transparency and honesty. Not just in business, but in real life too, I respect people who are honest. If you are true to someone, you automatically establish trust. As a working professional, I have learned that working on customer retention and building trust is the key to growth for any business. I want my customers to believe in me and this is why I always stay true to them.

5. MB: Yes, we too believe that trust can be built only on transparency and honesty. We all have some plans for our future and I am damn sure that you must have thought something exciting about your future in fitness. And for this mission, I promote natural practices in fitness and sports. I am working hard to create awareness among people regarding the major side effects of using steroids and drugs. What is Intermittent Fasting?

People spend thousands of money on weight loss supplements and fat loss products. But do you know with intermittent fasting you can achieve your weight loss goals? Yes, you read that right.

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern between the periods of eating and fasting. It doesn’t specify what kind of foods to eat but rather tell you when to eat them. Basically it is not a diet but an eating pattern. Common intermittent fasting diets include daily 16 hours fast or 24 hours twice a week. Some of the common intermittent fasting methods are as follows:

  • Eat, Stop, Eat: It requires 24 hours of fasting once or twice a week. For example, By not eating from breakfast one day until breakfast the next day.
  • The 16:8 Method: This method Includes skipping breakfast and restricting the daily eating period to 8 hours, like 1-9 pm. Then fasting for 16 hours in between.

BCAA’s – What Are Branched-Chain Amino Acids & It’s Benefits?

Branched Chain Amino Acids are a group of three essential amino acids from nine of them that includes leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Branched Chain is a chemical structure of these amino acids that people generally use for medicine. As essential amino acids are not made in the body itself, BCAA is taken from outside.

How Does BCAA Work?

Branched Chain Amino Acids enhance protein synthesis in the muscles that provide more protein in the muscles that help to reduce the breakdown of muscles in the body. These play an important role in various bodily functions as they fill a large part of amino acids in the body. There is around 35 to 45 percent of the BCAAs in the body wherein 14 to 18 percent of them are found in the muscles.

Unlike the many amino acids, these essential amino acids are broken down into muscles rather than life as they also play a role while doing exercises.

How does BCAA work in regulating Blood Sugar Levels?

It preserves the liver and stores sugar in muscles then it stimulates the cells by taking sugar from your bloodstream. Thus it regulates the blood sugar level.

How does BCAA work in Reducing Fatigue?

BCAA helps to limit the serotonin production in the brain. Due to production, we feel fatigued and exhausted after heavy training. Leucine is one of them that plays a very important role in enhancing the capacity of the body to develop the muscle protein so that the body is less exposed to fatigue.

The Sources of BCAAs:

If you are looking for the sources that have BCAA in abundance, you should look for protein-rich food. Luckily we have a lot of foods which are a great source of protein.

  • Plant-Based Sources: If you are vegan or vegetarian, there are some best plant-based foods which are great sources of protein as well as BCAAs that includes soy-based tofu, mock meats, seitan made from wheat gluten, tempeh and edamame made from soybean, lentils, beans, chickpeas, legume, nutritional yeast, teff, spelt, barley, farro, sorghum, einkorn, hempseed, chia seeds, flaxseeds, green peas, spirulina blue-green algae, quinoa, amaranth, and many more.
  • Animal Based Sources: These animal-based foods are rich in protein and essential amino acids that are the building blocks of proteins. The body has to break protein down into amino acids for digestion. Some of the animal-based sources of protein are fish, eggs, red meat from deer and bison, poultry sources are quails, turkeys, and chickens, and others. You can also get the BCAAs from dairy products like milk, cheese, ghee, butter, and whey.
  • BCAA Supplements: It is quite hard to carry all these sources with you when you are on frequent travel. Also, it takes a great time searching for the things that work on you. The other easy option is to have BCAA Supplement with you for your all essential amino acids needs. However, it is not a complete replacement of natural food but if you use it in your busy days this would help you to stay nourished.

What are the Benefits of BCAAs?

  • Helps in reducing mental as well as physical fatigue while doing intense training.
  • Shown improvements in athletic performances
  • Improves muscle strength by reducing soreness.
  • Protects against muscle damage by limiting creatine kinase, enzymes, and lactate dehydrogenase.
  • Lowers blood sugar level by increasing the usages of sugar by muscles from the blood.
  • Increases muscle mass by activating enzymes that build the muscles.
  • Enhances the process of weight loss by converting fat into energy.
  • Helps your liver as these do not break out in the liver. Also limits the possibility of fatty liver and failure.

Are BCAA Supplements Safe To Consume?

Branched Chain Amino Acids are safe to consume as they are essential amino acids. What really matters is the source of BCAA. If you are using BCAA Supplements you should take care of some precautions.

  • However there is not enough information available but if you are a pregnant or breastfeeding mother, you should avoid taking the BCAA supplement.
  • Try to take supplements by mouth. If you’re thinking of giving it to a child, make sure he/ she is more than six months old. But before it, consult your doctor.
  • In some medical conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, you should avoid BCAA Supplements.
  • If you are a chronic alcoholic, BCAAs can be the cause of liver disease that leads to brain damage. So, avoid it and leave alcohol immediately.

Takeaway

Maybe these essential amino acids are three in numbers but have a plethora of benefits for the body to function properly especially decreasing muscle fatigue, soreness, and muscle building. Try to take all the nutrients from the natural sources but if you feel it hard to manage from food, inclining toward BCAA Supplements would be a guilt-free decision for you.

Is Whey Protein Good for You? Discover the Truth Behind this Popular Supplement

Whey protein is a supplement popular for its muscle-building properties. But there is much more to whey protein than just muscle building. There is a hot debate on the benefits and possible side effects of whey protein. Whether this highly-researched protein supplement is good for you or not, read the post to understand.

The market is flooded with various types of protein supplements. Whether you are allergic to milk or lactose, vegan or belong to any other category; there is a protein supplement present in the market for everyone, which claims to give you the best results.

Is Whey Protein What You Really Need?

You might already be aware of the fact that whey helps in muscle building. But, you might not be informed about the other non-muscle benefits of whey protein powder. Weight loss, improving immune system function, enhancing cardiovascular health, helping with Type 2 diabetes, etc. are a few other benefits of whey protein. All this is because of a few peptides and the amount of protein found in whey supplements.

A Quick Intro to Whey Protein

Whey is a milk protein that is derived from cow’s milk mostly but can also be derived from goat or sheep’s milk sometimes. Milk has 2 types of proteins: whey, and casein. Whey in milk is just 20% whereas casein is 80%.

When milk is processed while making cheese, the liquid left behind is whey and you also obtain casein in solid form. Whey goes for further processing and filtration and is made into whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate mostly.

Digestibility of Whey

Whey protein is known for its easy digestibility as compared to other forms of protein. Though for some people it might be difficult to digest it. These people fall under the category of lactose intolerance or those who are allergic to milk and dairy products. People who have low tolerance towards lactose is mainly due to two compounds found in milk: Lactose and Casein.

Lactose is the natural milk sugar which many people face issue digesting. It leads to symptoms like bloating, nausea, cramping, etc. Casein is a milk protein that can give symptoms like gas and stomach pain in lactose-intolerant people.

The Amino Acid Story

Just like any other proteins, whey protein too contains amino acids. Amino acids act as the building blocks for the formation of all protein molecules and are also the key determinant in structuring your tissues, inclusive of the muscles, hair, skin, and nails.

Whey protein comprises of all the essential amino acids and also BCAA (Branched-chain amino acids) which help in muscle building. The reason why you need these ‘essential amino acids’ is because your body is not capable of producing them on its own. Around 35% of the protein in your muscle tissue is BCAA. These are widely known for their anabolic effects.

There are 3 main types of BCAAs: leucine, isoleucine, and valine. All 3 are crucial for muscle building but leucine out of these 3 is the most important one as it aids in muscle protein synthesis. Whey protein is highly rich in leucine.

Muscle Growth and Recovery & Whey

Amino acid circulation is required in the blood to build and repair your muscles. For this to happen, you need protein in a sufficient amount. We have explained how whey is so digestible and a good source of quality protein. The way whey helps in muscle building is by promoting positive overall protein balance in your muscle tissues.

Your overall net protein balance is equal to the protein synthesis minus your muscle breakdown. So put to it in simpler terms, your muscle mass will grow when the muscle synthesis overpowers muscle degeneration.

The Connection to Weight Loss and Development of Lean Muscle Mass

The ideal way to lose weight is to shed the body fat while attaining lean muscle mass. Lowering the intake of carbs and replacing the same amount with protein and fats is going to help you lose weight. You should also keep a check on your daily calorie intake. The type of protein supplement that you consume while trying to lose weight matters a lot.

Why whey can be the best choice for you- simply because it is rich in amino acids and BCAAs like leucine which helps in maintaining muscle mass. Also, it is more digestible as compared to other proteins.

Metabolic Disorders and Whey Protein

Whey protein helps in maintaining lean muscle mass while you are losing weight. This indicates a positive spike in metabolism. Whey protein positively affects metabolism, especially in those who are dealing with metabolic issues or issues like Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Obesity and diabetes are metabolic disorders that arise due to troubles with insulin. A constantly high blood glucose level is responsible for insulin problems. Various researches have shown that taking whey protein supplements has improved fasting insulin levels in people with obesity. Some researches also state that people dealing with Type 2 diabetes showed better post-meal glucose and insulin responses when they consumed whey protein before having a high-carb breakfast.

A Ray of Hope for Chronic Diseases

There are various researches that show that whey protein can prove to be helpful in the following mentioned chronic diseases:

  • Cancer: Some studies conducted to find out the effects of whey protein on cancer patients. The cysteine present in whey protein can help in minimizing the formation of tumors in the human body. The presence of lactoferrin suppresses the growth of colon cancer cells.
  • Cardiovascular diseases: People suffering from high blood pressure can be benefitted from whey protein supplements as they help in lowering blood pressure, improving the lipid profile and blood vessel function.
  • Gastrointestinal issues: In some studies, it was discovered that people suffering from Crohn’s disease can expect to have lower intestinal permeability or leaky gut when consuming whey protein on a regular basis.
  • Liver diseases: In a few studies conducted to find out the effects of whey protein on liver diseases, it was found that taking whey protein improved indicators of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in women with obesity.

Does Whey Protein has Any Side Effects?

Well, while most of the people face no issues with whey protein as it is highly digestible, people having a dairy allergy or lactose intolerance might face issues with whey protein consumption. There are various rumors about whey protein saying that it is harmful to kidneys. But the reality is that protein consumption can be of a bit trouble to you only if you have a pre-existing kidney condition. Whey protein causes no harm to individuals with a healthy kidney and liver.

In a nutshell, whey protein is beneficial for almost everyone and helps you build muscles, have healthy gains and weight loss along with enhancing lean muscle mass, muscle recovery, and muscle protein synthesis.

The whey protein can be helpful in enhancing muscle protein synthesis and also boosts the growth of lean tissue mass. There are a few pieces of evidence that suggest that whey protein can assist women with retaining muscle mass and losing body fat and ultimately achieve the weight loss goals.

What is the Protein’s Role in Weight Loss?

Protein is a very essential macronutrient for our bodies. It is related to growth and development. Our body’s every cell contains protein and it plays a crucial role in enhancing metabolism. It makes you feel full for longer hours and retains lean body mass helping you lose fat.

Various researches have shown the positive effect protein has on muscle-building and weight loss. According to a research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, high-protein diets that contain 1.2 to 1.6g of protein per kg of body weight, helps in decreasing appetite and thus helps in healthy weight loss goals.

The Weight Loss Science

The concept of weight-loss is not as tricky as you think it to be. The key to a successful and healthy weight loss is consuming lesser calories than you burn daily. There should be a calorie deficit to promote weight loss. If the calories you consume are the same as you burn, you won’t notice a difference in your weight as such and if the calorie consumed is higher than burned, you will end up gaining.

When it comes to weight loss, starving yourself is never a good option. Your body needs all the nutrients to function properly. Along with protein, you also need carbs and fats in some amount to keep your energy levels intact. When your body is nutrient-deprived, along with weight loss, you will also experience muscle loss. This is certainly not a healthy way to shred your body fat. Losing muscle is not good for you, what you should focus on is reducing the body fat.

So eating whole foods and taking proper meals is recommended when trying to lose weight, you just need to keep a check on your calorie intake.

Whey Protein Shakes for Weight Loss

Whey protein shakes are a quick and convenient source of protein which not only helps in muscle building and recovery but also helps with weight loss. A whey protein supplement with no added sugars, sweeteners or preservatives can have around 100 calories per scoop. Mixing whey protein powder with water can give you a low-calorie drink which can work as your meal replacement. Though you can also mix whey protein powder with milk or fruit juices and add other ingredients in it too. But remember, each thing that you add will change the caloric value of the shake. So be sure to calculate the calorie added with each added ingredient so that you do not exceed your required calorie requirement for each day.

Adding ingredients like banana, full-fat milk or yogurt, excessive honey or peanut butter adds to the calories of whey protein shake and pushes it towards a diet dense in calories. So, if you’re looking to lose weight, it might not be a wise choice to add these.

One thing that you need to understand is that whey protein is not a total replacement of whole foods. Whole foods should be consumed regularly in the required amount to fulfill your daily calorie and nutrient intake. Whole foods are rich in various other nutrients that your body needs and they also are rich in fiber. Even when we talk about protein, whole foods should be used as your primary source of protein.
